LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s golf team is back on course this week for the New Mexico State Aggie Invitational starting on Monday at the NMSU Golf Course.
The tournament will be a 54-hole event with 18 holes being played on each day through Wednesday. Each round will get underway with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
NMSU Golf Course plays 6,392 yards long and is a par 72.
Along with UTRGV, other schools competing include: host New Mexico State, California Baptist, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, Northern Arizona, North Dakota, Oral Roberts, Portland State, South Dakota State, Southern Utah, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UC Riverside, Utah Valley, UTEP, and Weber State.
UTRGV will be sending Tilda Green, Vicky Gonzalez, Michelle Moroles, Briana Garza, and Emma Mesta.
Last Time Out
UTRGV finished in seventh place last week at the Bearkat Invitational after posting a three-round total of 925. UTRGV posted rounds of 312, 297, and 316.
Michelle Moroles led the way for UTRGV with a 25th place finish after posting a three-round total of 230 after shooting rounds of 76, 69, and 85. Emma Mesta finished tied for 29th with a three-round total of 233 after posting rounds of 79, 79, and 75.
Tilda Green, Vicky Gonzalez, and Briana Garza finished tied for 37th with a three-round scores of 237. Green used rounds of 82, 75, and 80, Gonzalez posted rounds of 80, 81, and 76, and Garza turned in rounds of 77, 74, and 86.
Second Round Highlight
UTRGV posted a second round team score of 297, which is the third best team single round in program history.
In that second round, Michelle Moroles turned in a career-best three-under 69, which is the second lowest individual single round score in program history.
Briana Garza posted a second round 74, Tilda Green posted a 75, Emma Mesta shot a 79 and Vicky Gonzalez turned in an 81.
All together UTRGV improved by 15 strokes from the first round to the second, which moved them into sixth place.
Last Year at New Mexico State Aggie Invitational
UTRGV finished in ninth place at last year’s New Mexico State Aggie Invitational with a three-round score of 931.
UTRGV posted rounds of 301, 321, and 309.
Michelle Moroles led the way with an 18th place finish with a three-round score of 225. Tilda Green finished tied for 26th while Emma Mesta finished tied for 29th and Jessica Young finished in 49th.
Sacramento State won last year’s invitational with a three-round score of 873 while Weber State’s Kiselya Plewe won the individual title with a three-round score of 213.
UTRGV will close out its fall season when it travels to Manoa, Hawaii to compete at the Rainbow Wahine Invite from October 29-30.
