BEAUMONT- The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s tennis team returns to action when they face Lamar University on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
Last Time Out
UTRGV (3-4) snapped a seven-match losing streak against UTSA on February 10, with a 4-3 victory at home.
UTRGV fell behind early in the match as they dropped the doubles point.
In singles, Dominique Ibarra evened things up with a win over Charleen Tiwari on court three and then Doris Aleksovska followed with a win on court five over Sonia Madronal giving UTRGV the 2-1 lead.
Marine Darzyan made it a 3-1 lead for UTRGV after a win on court two over Ivana Ilic. Lasya Patnaik clinched the win with a win on court six over Diya Menon. Patnaik trailed 2-5 in the second set before winning five straight games to get the win.
Lamar is 1-2 on the season after picking up its first win of the season after defeating Prairie View A&M 4-0.
Its two losses came to start the season as they fell 0-7 to Rice and 1-5 to Houston.
Lamar is 4-11 in singles play with Milena Belianovich, Jasmin Buchta, Sanja Jolic and Amelie Vossgaetter each collecting singles victories this season.
As a team, Lamar is 3-3 in doubles action this season. Buchta and Natalia Molina have teamed up to play at the No. 1 spot while Vossgaeteter and Kaela Di Giulio have played at the No. 2 spot and Belianovich and Jolic have played at the No. 3 spot with each team collecting a doubles victory.
The All-Time Series
UTRGV is 7-19 all-time against Lamar in a series that dates back to 1989.
These two teams met up last season where Lamar came away with the 5-2 victory at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The last time UTRGV defeated Lamar came back on February 1, 2002.
UTRGV currently has eight student-athletes on the roster representing seven different countries, including the Macedonia, Mexico, Russia, Spain, India, Germany and Denmark.
UTRGV will back in action on Sunday when they travel to Huntsville to face Sam Houston State.
